Shabbat Shira on Sha’arei Shabbat

The tradition of connecting music and freedom goes all the way back to the story of our exodus from Egypt. In the Torah portion, Beshallach, God parts the Sea of Reeds, allowing our people to cross from slavery to freedom. They are so in awe of God’s miracles, and so grateful to be free that words alone cannot express their emotions. So Miriam, Moses’ sister, gathers the people together and leads them in joyous singing and dancing. Each year we commemorate that connection of freedom and music with Shabbat Shira, a Sabbath of Song.
